Telespazio Germany GmbH · Darmstadt, HE, Germany
Who You Are

We are looking for a Spacecraft Operations Engineer (SOE) with strong engineering skills and experience to support our customer EUMETSAT, based in Darmstadt. As a full member of our highly recognized SOE team for an upcoming mission as part of the highly prestigious Copernicus program, you will initially be responsible for mission preparation activities and eventually, deliver a state of the art spacecraft operations. Depending upon the requirement, you will also cross train with other missions.

The position is full-time and permanent.

We are looking forward to meeting you!

What You Will Focus on

You will be joining the mission team well before launch and work on getting the ground segment and operations ready for the tasks at hand. During this phase, you support the development and maintenance of the operational products (procedures, databases and documentation) and the testing and validation of ground support systems, including the Mission Control System (MCS), simulator and mission-specific tools and scripts. The System Validation Tests (SVTs) in particular are a unique opportunity for the ground segment to validate the satellite to ground interfaces and the flight operations procedures. Closer to the launch date, attention shifts towards the readiness of operations personnel: preparing the satellite handover activities and rehearsing nominal and off-nominal operational scenarios in the scope of the simulations campaign.

During the Launch and Early Operations Phase (LEOP), you monitor the execution of activities by the LEOP service provider and contribute to expert discussions with Industry. You advise and assist EUMETSAT’s Spacecraft Operations Manager (SOM) in all matters relating to mission implementation and spacecraft performance. With the start of the commissioning phase, and later routine phase, your focus will shift to:

  • Supporting the commissioning of the platform and payload systems
  • Conducting routine and special operations of the satellites
  • Monitoring the satellites' subsystems and instruments and analysing their performance and trends
  • Investigating satellite anomalies and preparing and executing recovery operations.
  • Providing on-call support
  • Maintaining operations documentation and flight procedures.
  • Identifying and supporting the implementation of system and process improvements in the team
What You Bring
  • You hold a Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering or related area
  • You have minimum 5 years of experience in LEO operations and operations preparation (negotiable)
  • You have a system level knowledge of ground and satellite (sub)systems. We expect you to have worked with several platform and payload (sub)systems and ground systems. Involvement in the study or early design phases of future Copernicus Missions (e.g. CHIME, CIMR, CO2M, CRISTAL, LSTM or ROSE-L) is a plus
  • You have a track record in operations preparation: development of operational products (procedures, databases and documentation) and the testing/validation of ground systems (mission control system, mission planning, on-board software maintenance tools, simulator)
  • You have conducted in-flight operations: including monitoring and control, mission planning, operations coordination, anomaly investigation and resolution, and provision of on-call.
  • You have in depth knowledge of Industry Standards and Protocols (CCSDS and ECSS)
  • You are familiar with SCOS-2000 and File Based Operations
  • You have programming/scripting skills, preferably Python, Matlab, and SQL/MYSQ
  • You are fluent in English, written and spoken

Essentially

  • Passionate about spacecraft operations and engineering
  • System level knowledge of ground and spacecraft (sub)systems; Your hands-on experience with several platforms (sub)systems and ground systems (in particular the mission control system) will support and push our team to the next level
  • Teamwork is key: Your positive and professional attitude
  • You have a drive to succeed and a desire to grow professionally
